I am the first to admit that Sahara has never crossed my mind when adding places to my long travel destination wish-list. And I am also the first to admit that The Africa Travel Blog has a huge bias towards Southern Africa. However, today I will step in a new direction. I will try to create an image of Sahara as a real travel destination rather than “that big, empty space we fly across on the way to South Africa”. And I know that I have a new image of Sahara after seeing these photos and video. What to see in Sahara?
So, what is there to see and do in the world’s largest desert? These are the first questions that came to my mind, and I decided to do a little research. And shockingly enough, the first thing that popped up was Sahara Safaris!?
I don’t know much about much, but I always imagined deserts as dead and deserted places. It’s in the name. And after more reading, I still sit with the impression that the only animals you’ll encounter are the Camels you’re riding (though, they are pretty entertaining, see the video below). Sahara Safaris are more about watching the unique, intimidating and absolutely beautiful landscape. I am sure the Saharan scenery could deserve a whole book of adjectives, but I will trust the photos in this post to tell the story.
What to do in Sahara?
For being the largest dead zone in the world, it is surprisingly tourist friendly, with lots of activities to engage it’s visitors. How about Sand Boarding, or Camel Treks, or 4x4 Offroading, or just some Arabic style romantic evenings? It’s all there for you. And in between the activities, you can read up on the ancient, dramatic history of the desert and all the stories that has unfolded there.
