If you ever thought tent camping in Africa was for those rugged, outdoorsy people, you’ll have to think again. Africa offers the most amazing, comfortable and luxurious tent camps in the world. You can actually find five star resorts, were everybody sleeps and eats in tents! So no matter how high your standards are, you should be able to find a tent camp that exceeds all your expectations. And after you’ve done your first safari, seeing the big five from your seat in an open Land Rover, you will realize that tent safaris in Africa have found the perfect harmony between adventure and comfort. Actually, my experience is that everyone who have done this are all dying to go back.
The most popular safari destinations are the Kruger Park in South Africa, the Okavanga Delta in Botswana, and Masai Mara and Serengeti in Kenya and Tanzania. They each have their own characteristics, but they are all home to several of the most important animals that tourists wish to see (the big five++). And they are also home to the world’s most excellent resorts and camps. I recently went to a presentation held by Ken Hermer from Journeys in Style, where he introduced us to some amazing safari lodges, resorts and camps around Southern Africa. And what I saw was just too much for my travel lust.
How would you like a large tent, with wooden floor, en-suite bathrooms, king size bed, sofas, air condition and a personal, shaded veranda overlooking a park full of elephants, giraffes and hundreds of other animals living their life right in front of your eyes? It doesn’t sound like roughing it, does it? It’s probably the only way you can experience adventures like trekking among hippos and zebras, while at the same time enjoying the most wonderful luxury.
If it wasn’t for the horrendous cost of it, I would live every day of my life like that. However, I can always dream while I am flipping through these photos of the luxury that I know exist, but might never see. All photos below are from Little Naibor in Masai Mara. Take a look and imagine yourself waking up to the sound of elephants and lions in one of those tents.
Have you been to a tented safari lodge? I would love to hear your experience! Either leave a comment below, send me an email or share your experiences by registering your own Africa Travel Blog!
