Getting a handle on it

August 9th, 2009 by aussiesinafrica

So I wrote this big long boring post about the start of our trip and where we wanted to stay and the time we touched down etc. I then re-read it and nearly fell asleep. If our trip of a lifetime (so far) has turned into a way to get some good shut eye then I have serious problems – and my writing ability needs a lot of work. So, instead here is a snapshot of what I want to get from this African experience and a bit of insight into answering the question that everyone keeps asking – why Africa? I hope to look back on this post the same time next year and know I got this much out of it and more, I also want to be able to answer the annoying question above with more fervor and passion than I can now. If the Africa bug bites me it better leave a bloody big scar!

The Africa Adventure is Closer to Reality

View over Cape Town and Lions Head from Table Mountain

Approximately six months ago my girlfriend, Eleyce, asked me what I thought about going back to Cape Town, South Africa, for grad school. This was exactly one year after we left Cape Town last time, and we both felt more than ready to return to our favorite city. So, not surprisingly, I immediately said yes to her suggestion and soon after we applied for our masters programs at the University of Cape Town. And last week I got the message I had been waiting for: I am accepted for admission at School of Economics, UCT. Eleyce was already accepted for the masters program in International Relations, so we could finally start planning our next step in life!

“New Blogger: I’m Jess and I’m traveling to Southern Africa“.

August 5th, 2009 by aussiesinafrica

Come January 2010 my boyfriend and I will be starting our 3 month adventure through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana & Mozambique. Our plan is to hire a 4×4 through ‘Just done it’ and drive ourselves around, camping for the majority of our trip.

It’s our first trip to Africa and I’m extremely excited/slightly nervous. My folks are stressing as they think it’s very dangerous but I’m ignoring their bad juju!

Surfing in South Africa – Best Surf Spots and Beaches for Beginners and Pros

July 30th, 2009 by admin

Supertubes at J-Bay

Supertubes at J-Bay

South Africa has become a popular destination for surfers from all around the world. And not without reason; in South Africa you will find world class surfs, but also get a real African adventure at the same time. Here you can enjoy safaris and wildlife one day and “Super Tubes” at J-bay the next. But before you leave home you should remind yourself that South Africa is a huge country, and it can be hard to get around to all the beaches in one week! And that is why I wrote this quick introduction to the South African surf, so you can choose where to go before you go!

I’m Going to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda and need your advice! -by Tim Steve

July 23rd, 2009 by Tim Steve

The decision has been made. The destination will be Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. After some good advice on my first post, and reading through forums and guide books, I have chosen to go for new experiences in Uganda and Rwanda, rather than the typical beach vacation in Zanzibar. This will be the trip of my life, and I want it to be different.

How to Travel Africa on a Budget

Make Your Safari Affordable! Photo: Martin Clay

Travel in Africa, especially safaris, can often be very expensive, but here is a quick guide to help you budget and reduce the costs of your Africa vacation. This guide is not for you who prefer luxurious resorts, marble hot tubs and air conditioned Land Rovers. Well, we all might prefer that, but this is a guide for you who just can’t afford it. There are plenty of ways to cut the costs of your African safari, you just have to be willing to be roughing it a little bit, and maybe step out of your own comfort zone a couple of times. But even though your vacation might not be as relaxing and luxurious as you had dreamed off, it will definitely be adventurous, exciting and full of unique experiences!

New Blogger: I’m Tim and I’m Traveling to East Africa!

July 7th, 2009 by Tim Steve

Hi,

Looks like I am the first one to register as a “Fellow Travel Blogger” on this sweet Africa blog. So I will just give a short introduction to who I am and where I am traveling:

My name is Tim, I am an American citizen, but feel more like a World citizen. I have traveled all my life and my next trip will be to East Africa. I have never traveled in Africa before, so if other travelers have any advice for me that would be awesome! I haven’t set up a detailed plan for my trip other than a few “must-do’s” like the safaris, etc. I imagine the end result will be something like:

Flying into Nairobi and travel from there to Tanzania. Safari either in Kenya, Tanzania or both. After this I will probably be going down to the coast, maybe even to Zanzibar. I have also been considering Uganda and Rwanda instead of Tanzania’s coast / Zanzibar, but I don’t know much about those countries yet. So basically all I need now is some suggestions from people with more travel experience in those areas than what I have!

And I will keep you all updated on how my plan develops, and hopefully I will write some thrilling blog posts from my trip when I’m over there!

Thanks,

-Tim

Why Cape Town is the Perfect Travel Destination City

June 19th, 2009 by admin

Downtown Cape Town seen from Table Mountain

Downtown Cape Town seen from Table Mountain

Cape Town is probably my favorite city in the world. I have traveled to more than 20 countries, and visited countless cities, several of them that I will always love, like Hanoi and Bangkok, but Cape Town is just special. The weird thing is that it’s almost impossible for me to describe why. It’s just something about the feeling of the city. I can’t put my finger on one specific thing that made it so great, but I think it has to do with the mixture of a totally amazing location and scenery, combined with a huge diversity in people, cultures, architecture, history and experiences.
