Obama Safari – Silly Gimmick or Actually Interesting?

So after last year’s American presidential election a new gimmick entered into the world of Africa Travel Deals, the “Obama Safari“! I noticed this for the first time several months ago, but have recently seen this interesting safari title pop on numerous safari websites. What I wonder is if this Obama Safari really have anything at all to do with Obama? A safari is usually centered around watching animals. What does that have to do with the American President? Or did I miss the news about a new animal species called Obama? To me this looks like a silly way to sell more safaris, but maybe I’m wrong, is this actually an interesting alternative to the regular safaris?

Will Soccer Tourists Disturb this Peace?

On June 11th, 2010, the FIFA Soccer World Cup kicks of in South Africa, and the whole world will be watching. But even more important for people living in South Africa, is that for them it will feel like the whole world is watching from within South Africa. What I mean is: The amount of tourists flowing in to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and other host cities will be enormous. Hotels, restaurants, tour companies, safari camps and even the vineyards are all bracing up for this huge event. And there is no question that money will be made, jobs created and the country’s tourism industry gets invaluable attention in the world media. But the questions I ask are:Will South Africa actually be able to pull it off and create a lasting good image of itself as a family friendly, safe and responsible travel destination? Will the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup be good for South Africa in the long run?

Who Won South Africa’s Election?

– UPDATE– All votes have now been counted and it is now clear who won the South African election. ANC with Jacob Zuma won 65.9% of the votes, which is a huge victory, but not as huge as some expected. The ANC did not get the 2/3 of the votes as they hoped for and would have needed for the mandate to change the constitution. The DA got 16.66% of the votes.
