Living In South Africa

November 24th, 2011 by martindalefarm

I am an American who has been living in South Africa for the past 7 plus years. I had always heard and seen nothing but horror stories about Africa and it’s people. I never dreamed that one day I would be living in this beautiful country.

I met my now husband on the Internet, who is from the UK, but has been living in South Africa for over 30 years and has traveled the country quite a bit.

I am very impressed with the wildlife that actually roams the bush here. It is like none that you will see any place else. It is not unusual to see baboons or monkeys simply playing along the side of the roads here. We have seen elephants, that I can safely say, if I had put my hand out the window of the car, I would have been able to touch it. Zebras are the most beautiful creatures to see in their natural habitat, as is lions and warthogs. My eyes have seen more beautiful animals in the wild than I would ever want to see in the zoo.

Bird life, is abundant and it is nothing to hear or to see an owl sitting on your fence post. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity that I have had during these 7+ years. I shall truly miss it, as we are selling our small farm and moving to the US.

We have what is called a smallholding farm of 18 1/2 acres and if I could box it all up and put it onto the container cargo ship and open it up and continue my life, I would not hesitate. South Africa is truly an amazing place, especially along the coastal areas.

Game farms are abundant here. People raise all sorts of animals for various reasons, but to actually see them in the wild is an experience that one shall never forget.

The people I have met while being in South Africa are so special. I have learned that people of all walks of life really can live side by side and learn to get along with one another. There are a total of 11 official languages here in South Africa. Me, well I can only speak my English and I have learned a tiny Xoshua, very tiny. I will always remember that the time I spent here in South Africa has been rewarding and educational.

Getting a handle on it

August 9th, 2009 by aussiesinafrica

So I wrote this big long boring post about the start of our trip and where we wanted to stay and the time we touched down etc. I then re-read it and nearly fell asleep. If our trip of a lifetime (so far) has turned into a way to get some good shut eye then I have serious problems – and my writing ability needs a lot of work. So, instead here is a snapshot of what I want to get from this African experience and a bit of insight into answering the question that everyone keeps asking – why Africa? I hope to look back on this post the same time next year and know I got this much out of it and more, I also want to be able to answer the annoying question above with more fervor and passion than I can now. If the Africa bug bites me it better leave a bloody big scar!

“New Blogger: I’m Jess and I’m traveling to Southern Africa“.

August 5th, 2009 by aussiesinafrica

Come January 2010 my boyfriend and I will be starting our 3 month adventure through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana & Mozambique. Our plan is to hire a 4×4 through ‘Just done it’ and drive ourselves around, camping for the majority of our trip.

It’s our first trip to Africa and I’m extremely excited/slightly nervous. My folks are stressing as they think it’s very dangerous but I’m ignoring their bad juju!

8 Useful Items to Bring when Traveling to Africa – by KerDowney

July 27th, 2009 by KerDowney

Bring Binoculars for Bird watching!

Bring Binoculars for Bird watching!

Packing for an African trip can be stressful if you have never traveled there before. It’s a good idea to speak with your travel company or guides before you pack and ask them what they recommend to bring. Remember, not all regions of Africa are the same so it is best to ask someone with knowledge and experience.

Be very critical of the items and amount you pack. You will either thank or hate yourself later. You can usually find anything you need in most parts of Africa so be honest with yourself as to whether you truly need what you plan to bring.

Below are several useful items recommended to bring with you to Africa that have proven themselves useful. If you have traveled to Africa before and would like to add your tips on useful things to bring, please leave a comment with your suggestions!

I’m Going to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda and need your advice! -by Tim Steve

July 23rd, 2009 by Tim Steve

The decision has been made. The destination will be Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. After some good advice on my first post, and reading through forums and guide books, I have chosen to go for new experiences in Uganda and Rwanda, rather than the typical beach vacation in Zanzibar. This will be the trip of my life, and I want it to be different.

New Blogger: I’m Tim and I’m Traveling to East Africa!

July 7th, 2009 by Tim Steve

Hi,

Looks like I am the first one to register as a “Fellow Travel Blogger” on this sweet Africa blog. So I will just give a short introduction to who I am and where I am traveling:

My name is Tim, I am an American citizen, but feel more like a World citizen. I have traveled all my life and my next trip will be to East Africa. I have never traveled in Africa before, so if other travelers have any advice for me that would be awesome! I haven’t set up a detailed plan for my trip other than a few “must-do’s” like the safaris, etc. I imagine the end result will be something like:

Flying into Nairobi and travel from there to Tanzania. Safari either in Kenya, Tanzania or both. After this I will probably be going down to the coast, maybe even to Zanzibar. I have also been considering Uganda and Rwanda instead of Tanzania’s coast / Zanzibar, but I don’t know much about those countries yet. So basically all I need now is some suggestions from people with more travel experience in those areas than what I have!

And I will keep you all updated on how my plan develops, and hopefully I will write some thrilling blog posts from my trip when I’m over there!

Thanks,

-Tim
