And that is good news for us travelers who are looking for a hotel out of the ordinary. In this post I will show you 4 of the most memorable places to stay in South Africa.

Tsala Treetop Lodge

Tsala Treetop Lodge is a five star luxury hotel situated (as the name implies) in the treetops of an ancient forest overlooking the Garden Route in South Africa. Located between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, this unique lodge is easily accessible for most of South Africa’s tourists of which almost all spend a few days on the Garden Route.

However, I said easily accessible, but maybe not as affordable. This is not the place for you who are looking for B&B’s or budget hotels (though, you might be interested in The Jambo Guest House mentioned later in this post). At Tsala Treetop Lodge, the lowest rates in the low season start at R1650 (South African Rands) per person. In high season it is R3650 per person. But this seems to be a fair price to pay for the divine experience you can expect.

Staying at Tsala involves relaxing in your very private treetop suite or two bedroom villa, each connected to the main lodge by elevated wooden walkways. And a quick look at TripAdvisor reveals that Tsala Treetop Lodge has extraordinary great reviews, something that I don’t find surprising after looking through the pictures from this luxurious lodge.

Jambo Guest House

Jambo Guest House offers a more down to earth luxury. Build on steady ground on Greenpoint in Cape Town, this cozy guest house has a convenient central location (especially during the World Cup!!) and offers a friendly and peaceful option to the standard metropolitan hotels.

And considering their affordable rates, they have an impressive amount of raving reviews. At R650 per person per night, you can sleep in a comfortable bed in a luxurious room at an award winning bed and breakfast! Each room has it’s own design, and in the garden you’ll find a hot Jacuzzi Spa and an English style pub. There might be good reasons for why they call this place an “oasis of peace and tranquility right in the heart of bustling [...] Cape Town”.

Daddy Long Legs

Even though Daddy Long Legs and Jambo Guest House are both fun and interesting places to stay, at the same price range, they are also complete opposites. Where Jambo is warm, cozy and relaxing, Daddy Long Legs is crazy, modern, cool and funky. At this hotel, each room is 100% unique, and the interior design is like an exhibition of abstract art. With room names such as The Photo Booth, Please Do Not Disturb, The Emergency Room and Being Mak!One, you can only try to imagine what the rooms actually look like.

You will find the hotel on Long Street, which is Cape Town’s number one shopping / dining / party street. As is the case with Jambo, Daddy Long Legs is also an award winning hotel, but most likely for different qualities. And if this is not enough, they have recently expanded with a luxury version of their crazy hotel: The Grand Daddy.

Flycatcher Castle

The people behind Flycatcher Castle seem to have been struck by a sort of split personality disorder. They consistently call this place a guest house, while at the same time talking about a castle that will give you the “royal spoil”. I don’t know, maybe I am the only one who picture something less grand when I hear the word guest house.

Well, whatever you call it, the Flycatcher Castle is definitely a unique and different hotel. With the feel of a 17th century fairly tale you will live South Africa’s most diverse region, full of magnificent tourist attractions like the Drakensberg Mountains, God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon, Echo Caves and the Kruger Park.
