Mnemba – The Heart Shaped Paradise Island

December 2nd, 2009 by admin

Mnemba IslandJust east of Zanzibar, you can find a tiny, little, heart shaped paradise island called Mnemba. The island seems to be the perfect extension of Zanzibar, with an even more relaxed and highly luxurious atmosphere, practically no people, and an unbeatable tropical beauty. As you fly over the island, you will instantly see that this place must be one of the most romantic destinations in the world (and from a certain angle the island appears to have the perfect shape of a heart!).

Mnemba IslandMnemba is actually part of a greater protection zone and the official title of the island is Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area. It is set on a large corral reef called Mnemba Atoll, which is also a perfect spot for scuba diving and snorkeling. Though, if you want to visit the island, you have to stay at the one only lodge that is located there. And not just that, the entire island is leased by the owners of the lodge, which means that you actually need a reservation to visit the island itself. And this is not a budget friendly destination, but it certainly is friendly to your heart and soul (not to mention your eyes!).

The only place to stay is called Mnemba Island Lodge and is owned by CC Africa. It is a truly laid back, high end eco lodge, where you can enjoy unbeatable luxury while wearing your swimsuit and flip-flops. There are no pretentious dress codes, only relaxed comfort and endless amenities. All suites have their own butler, the food is known to be amazing and you have a wide range of water activities keep you busy.

Mnemba Scuba Diving
There are only ten cottages on the island, each of them placed discreetly at the edge of the beach. They are built from mostly local materials, and blend in with the look of the island. They all use solar energy for lighting and refrigerators. And while you’re staying there, make sure not interfere with the local wildlife. Do not pick up corrals, shells, fish or anything else. These rules are there because of the conservation and protection of the area. Though, what you are allowed to do is:

  • Windsurfing
  • Kayaking
  • Bird Watching
  • Deep Sea Fishing (outside of the protection zone)
  • Swimming (of course)
  • Scuba diving and snorkeling
  • Lean back and enjoy life on the beautiful paradise island

Though, what I imagine to be the most popular activity on the island is romantic afternoons with your soul mate. What can be more romantic than your own miniature heart shaped island in the Indian Ocean? Conde Nast Traveler actually ranked Mnemba as one of the three most romantic ocean destinations in the world. So, if you have the funds necessary, approximately $1200 USD per person per night, then go ahead and book a few days in paradise!

  1. The 130,000 square yard islet of Galesnjak came to prominence after its unusual shape was highlighted on Google Earth.

Even the owner of the uninhabited island – now known as Lovers’ Island – didn’t realise how perfectly heart-shaped the island off the Croatian coast was until he was swamped with requests from couples to stay there.

It seems many lovers from around the world consider it the ideal spot for a romantic Valentine’s Day break.
