In Africa the Sun Always Shines (somewhere)

sphinxFor those who suffer through the dreary cold and dark winters of the northern hemisphere, it is a comforting thought that the sun always shines somewhere in Africa. South Africa is at its peak of summer in February. However, for the ultimate sun holidays you may wish to aim for a destination that has the highest chance of sunshine and summery weather all year around.

One great option would be Egypt, with its all-year-round warm climate, beautiful beaches and of course historical and cultural sights that no other country can match. The popular way to see Egypt would be a week exploring its monumental historical sights, including of course the pyramids. And then end the trip with a week at a relaxing resort on the beach by the Red Sea. Perhaps the vacation could be made even better by including a river cruise on the Nile!

camps bayIf you are desperate for a truly hot summer as soon as possible, then the best advice would be to fly straight to South Africa. The ultimate summer towns are of course Cape Town, but also Durban and Port Elizabeth. And do not forget all the beautiful small beach towns along the Garden Route, such as Knysna and Plattenburg Bay. Cape Town will be the most diverse destination, with endless possibilities to keep you entertained. You will find stunning beaches in Camps Bay (for the lively beach with drinks on the board walk), in Clifton (for the smaller and more secluded beaches) and in Lladudno or Nordhoek for the really quiet relaxing beach experience. And once you are beached out you may spend a day exploring the beautiful wine country before heading to Long Street to explore the Capetonian nightlife.

The last option for a desperate sun-seeker may be to combine the hunt for hot summer days with a more adventurous (though luxurious) safari. The hottest, if temperature is what guides your freezing body these days, would be a safari in the Kalahari dessert. But be aware that the heat may be too much to handle even if this is what you came for. February in the Kalahari is not strange to 40+ degree heat (Celcius). But the good thing is that this heat pulls all the animals to their favorite watering holes, and that makes them much easier to find!

So, there should be no more doubt. If you currently find yourself in a freezing country desperate for a good sun holiday, Africa is the place to go!

Africa – Explorers with Standards

Karisia 3Getting off the beaten track in Africa doesn’t necessarily mean roughing it in the bush. There are
some incredible lodges and hotels that, if you take the time to get off the tourist trail, can throw
up unique experiences that few other people get to be a part of. Here’s three of our top ways to
experience a luxury holiday in Africa off the beaten track.

Greystoke Mahale – Tanzania
Mahale_dinner_on_beachWild, remote and breathtakingly beautiful, Greystoke Mahale is made up of just six thatched bandas
in one of Tanzania’s most exotic locations. Sitting on the edge of Lake Tanganyika, with views across
the majestic Mahale Mountains, Greystoke Mahale is only accessible only by light aircraft and also
home to one of the last wild chimpanzee populations.

Karisia Walking Safari – Kenya
grestoke (2)In the wilds of Northern Kenya swap the glitzy luxury lodges form an altogether more authentic
experience with a Karisia Walking Safari. Spend days tramping through the bush with Samburu
warriors as your guides and have your food delivered each evening by camel. Karisia are pioneering
mountain-biking safaris in Kenya, so if the pace of walking is two slow hop on two wheels to really
explore this incredible region.

Kaya Mawa – Malawi
KayaMawa13(2)_masterPerched on the shore of Likoma Island, Kaya Mawa is a luxury retreat from modern life and the
ultimate escape from the outside world. Rooms either lead perfectly into the clear waters of Lake
Malawi, while others are tucked amongst the boulders of the lake shore. There’s also a spectacular
private island for luxury holidays and honeymoons, and a house for families and groups of friends.

What Taba Offers For A Holiday

Scuba diving at Elphinstone Reef in the Red Sea, Egypt - Photo by Derek Keats

Egypt has a rich culture and a long history. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Taba. Walking among lush gardens, gazing at the uniquely styled buildings, or meandering along dusty avenues, one can easily imagine taking a step back in time to days of magic and miracles. Ancient ruins resting quietly in the baking desert sun give the place a sense of mystery and hidden meaning. It is easy to visualize the beginnings of the small Bedouin village that grew from the arid land to become the popular tourist attraction it is today.

The Taba hotels and resorts offer open balconies that allow for the enjoyment of the night air while offering the comfort of safety against the elements. Soft Egyptian cotton enfolds the body as sleep brings dreams of the ancient stories, handed down for generations. Those on business can arrange meetings, gain access to internet, enjoy the creature comforts such as a mini-bar, in-room safes and comfortable transport to and from the airport.

Travel to Africa is the New Trend – Be part of it..

If you like it or not, Africa is about to become the new trendy travel destination. According to the latest rumor from the World Tourism Organization, Africa is receiving a boom of tourists, while the rest of the world is experiencing the opposite. In fact, the actual numbers say that Africa’s tourist arrivals for 2009 was 5% higher than the previous year, while the total amount of travelers in the world was reduced by 4%. Thus, Africa seems to be on a good track. And why exactly is that? Well, the experts have agreed: Obama and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town

Cape Town's Waterfront There are a few items on every tourist’s to-do list in Cape Town. Shopping / dining at the V&A Waterfront is likely to be one of them. This relatively recently developed part of Cape Town has most of what it takes to please your appetite as well as your mind (the part of your mind that loves a new piece of clothing, art, or fancy gadget). The only part of you that may suffer is your financial conscience. For most of us, it can be a tough challenge to spend a day at the Waterfront without severely breaking your planned travel budget.

The Blog Awakes, This Time in Cape Town

Regular readers will have noticed that the blog has been quite sleepy over the past 6-8 weeks. The reason behind this drowsiness is that the blog (or the author), has changed it’s base from California to Cape Town (with a four week de-tour in Norway). The good news, though, are that I am now settled in Cape Town, South Africa, and the blog will again be regularly updated with interesting stories, photos, destinations, tips, advice and lots of travel information; This time served to you directly from the southern tip of Africa.

The focus of the stories, will as you might expect, be centered around the city and country of their origin, Cape Town and South Africa. But I will do my best to also include at least one post a week about a destination elsewhere in Africa.

If you have any comments about the blog, now is the time to share them. And until next post is published, here are a few photos from my descent into the Mother City, with the infamous Table Mountain and Table Cloth in the lead role.

A Place to Watch Flamingos by the Millions

Flamingos at Lake Nakuru - by donpf1 on Flickr Creative Commons

Flamingos at Lake Nakuru - by donpf1 on Flickr

You may have heard of this place, or at least seen clips from it on TV; where thousands of thousands, sometimes millions, of bright pink flamingos gather in a great spectacle on one single lake. Does it sound familiar? Well, what you have seen on TV is not special effects, it is a real place with real birds and you can go there to see it. The place to go is Lake Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya.

Lake Nakuru is conveniently located close to the Masai Mara which makes it a popular destination for safari tourists. And watching flamingos is essentially the only thing you do at this destination. It might not sound like the most thrilling activity, but when the number of birds exceeds a million, sometimes two million, it suddenly becomes more exhilarating! The sight can only be described as unbelievable, when the blue lake seems to disappear under a massive layer of hungry, pink flamingos. And soon after you might see the sky turn pink, as the entire flock of birds decides to take off at the same time.

Moving To South Africa – Blog Information

The Africa Travel Blog has been a little quiet lately, and there is a reason for that. Over the past couple of weeks I have been very busy preparing for a big move. A move all the way from San Diego, California, via Oslo, Norway, to Cape Town in South Africa. And the first step will be taken the day after tomorrow, when the whole transition begins with a flight to Oslo. Two weeks later I will be accompanied with my lovely fiance, Eleyce, and together we will fly to South Africa.

Now, during this transition time of about 4 weeks, the blog may be more or less slow and not very regularly updated. Though, I hope you will forgive me, because after this temporary slump, The Africa Travel Blog will revive and I will bring you first hand travel information from the amazing African continent (at least the southern tip of it!).

Follow My Africa Journal – Experiences, pictures and stories

If you’re a personal friend, family or just curious, you should follow my personal journal where I will share my experiences, pictures and stories. You will find my journal, naturally, in the JOURNALS category. And if you’re really curious about how our life will be like down there, well then I suggest that you sign up to the email alerts for the journal. That means that you will receive an email every day I have posted a little blurb about what I am doing down there! Click here to subscribe!

Follow The Africa Travel Blog – Information, tips, destinations and news

If you’re not very interested in my personal life, but rather want to follow the travel tips, news, and information that usually appear on the blog’s front page; Then you can sign up to the Admin RSS which sends you an email alert every day there is a new post (but it ignores my personal journal blurbs). Green Traveler’s: Look here to find organic food in Cape Town!

Organic Food from www.wildorganicfoods.com

Organic Food from The Wild Trading Store

Traveling to a different continent, different country or just a different city, can usually make it very difficult to sustain your regular food habits. Though, often it is not because the food you want are not available, it’s just that you don’t know where to find it. Personally, I have had a very recent revelation that convinced me to be much better at eating organic food (I never used to care, and I am not a freak about it, I just got shocked and disgusted from watching the documentary Food Inc). And that inspired me to find out; Where can i buy organic food in Cape Town? Are there any organic restaurants, shops or farmer’s markets in the mother city? Let’s find out..
