I decided to make a list of 6 Africa travel tips that I believe will make your trip to Africa even better! The list is based on my personal experience and knowledge, and I encourage everybody who are backpacking or going on tours in Africa to use their own travel skills and common sense, rather than base your luck on a few tips found on the internet. However, sometimes it can be very helpful to learn from other travelers and the tips they share.

One of my favorite travel moments from Africa was a self drive safari in Etosha National Park in Namibia with my girlfriend, Eleyce. At that time we had been traveling around Southern Africa in “public” overstuffed minibuses for several weeks, so we decided that we deserved our own car for the safari. I still remember the fat smiles on our faces as we sat down in our rented Toyota Yaris. Not exactly a Land Rover like most of the other tourists, but to us the Yaris was a highly appreciated luxury!

I thought it was time to share a little secret with all of our readers. It is my favorite beach in Africa. It is not overly crowded, but it still has enough people to share the fun with. It’s not great for surfing, but the place is so relaxed that you won’t even feel like surfing in the first place. It is just perfect for what I think a beach in Mozambique should be used for: Forgetting about your regular life and just relax and have fun with friends and other backpackers. The beach is called Tofo, and is located a good day’s drive north of Maputo.

The People are Ready for the Soccer World Cup!
The more interesting question is how well the organization and government run part of this event will be prepared? (Oh, by the way, if my talk of the private sector vs the government makes you believe that I am a conservative pro-market anti-government economist, I am happy to inform you that I gave a false impression).
Will South-Africa be ready for the World Cup when it starts in June 2010? How far have they come? Do we even have any reason to worry?

Garden Route offers everything from cute, little beach towns, to world class surfs and world class bungee jumping. I have already mentioned my road trip along the Garden Route, so here I will continue with sharing pictures and thoughts about one specific adventure this trip included: The World’s Highest Commercial Bungee Jump!
So we were on our way, driving, pretending to be all cool about it, while at the same time being extremely excited. I couldn’t tell if I was scared or not, but I was definitely not feeling normal. We got there, went on to the scale, had are weight written on our wrist in a bold, fat print (no place to be self conscious), and were strapped up in some sort of harness. I still wonder what this harness was for. Honestly I think it was just a thing they did to make us feel safe and protected. I can’t remember they ever strapped the harness into anything. Other than a tiny little rope to the “foot loop” during the jump. Anyways, after these preparations they led us out onto the bridge (see pictures).

There are a few things to consider when choosing the destination for your summer vacation. Safety is one of them. And surprisingly, safety seems to be a greatly subjective topic. Everybody agrees that the Grand Canyon is stunning (include me, and I haven’t even been there), or that Norway’s fjords are beautiful. But if you ask a person if travel in Africa is safe, you will get a lot of different answers. A racist old Afrikaaner in Jo’burg might say that it’s a hell hole. The identical guy in Texas would agree. But ask a backpacker who has hitchhiked through ten countries in Africa all alone, and he might say it’s as safe as his own home town in Canada. Personally I would avoid giving a clear answer to the question, but stupidly I have already claimed in the headline that I am in possession of the truth. So now that you have already started reading, I will tell you what I really meant; “Here is what I personally think is the truth about crime and safety for travelers in Africa”.

So I wrote this big long boring post about the start of our trip and where we wanted to stay and the time we touched down etc. I then re-read it and nearly fell asleep. If our trip of a lifetime (so far) has turned into a way to get some good shut eye then I have serious problems – and my writing ability needs a lot of work. So, instead here is a snapshot of what I want to get from this African experience and a bit of insight into answering the question that everyone keeps asking – why Africa? I hope to look back on this post the same time next year and know I got this much out of it and more, I also want to be able to answer the annoying question above with more fervor and passion than I can now. If the Africa bug bites me it better leave a bloody big scar!

Come January 2010 my boyfriend and I will be starting our 3 month adventure through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana & Mozambique. Our plan is to hire a 4×4 through ‘Just done it’ and drive ourselves around, camping for the majority of our trip.
It’s our first trip to Africa and I’m extremely excited/slightly nervous. My folks are stressing as they think it’s very dangerous but I’m ignoring their bad juju!
