A Place to Watch Flamingos by the Millions

Flamingos at Lake Nakuru - by donpf1 on Flickr

You may have heard of this place, or at least seen clips from it on TV; where thousands of thousands, sometimes millions, of bright pink flamingos gather in a great spectacle on one single lake. Does it sound familiar? Well, what you have seen on TV is not special effects, it is a real place with real birds and you can go there to see it. The place to go is Lake Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya.

Lake Nakuru is conveniently located close to the Masai Mara which makes it a popular destination for safari tourists. And watching flamingos is essentially the only thing you do at this destination. It might not sound like the most thrilling activity, but when the number of birds exceeds a million, sometimes two million, it suddenly becomes more exhilarating! The sight can only be described as unbelievable, when the blue lake seems to disappear under a massive layer of hungry, pink flamingos. And soon after you might see the sky turn pink, as the entire flock of birds decides to take off at the same time.

Human Evolution Tours

September 8th, 2009 by icarus_adam

Anyone interested in an “off the beaten path” idea for side trips in Africa should consider the following Human Evolution trips.

1. Transvaal Museum, Pretoria, South Africa

The Transvaal hosts several important discoveries. There is a large exhibit and if you call ahead you can arrange to take a free tour with one of the research assistants. You will learn about human evolution and the important fossils that were found in the area surrounding Swartkrans and Sterkfontein. You can even see the actually fossil of Mrs. Ples. An Australopithicas Afrikanus skull, dated 2-3 million years ago, one of the first apes to walk upright. Truly amazing.

I’m Going to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda and need your advice! -by Tim Steve

July 23rd, 2009 by Tim Steve

The decision has been made. The destination will be Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. After some good advice on my first post, and reading through forums and guide books, I have chosen to go for new experiences in Uganda and Rwanda, rather than the typical beach vacation in Zanzibar. This will be the trip of my life, and I want it to be different.

Obama Safari – Silly Gimmick or Actually Interesting?

July 14th, 2009 by admin

So after last year’s American presidential election a new gimmick entered into the world of Africa Travel Deals, the “Obama Safari“! I noticed this for the first time several months ago, but have recently seen this interesting safari title pop on numerous safari websites. What I wonder is if this Obama Safari really have anything at all to do with Obama? A safari is usually centered around watching animals. What does that have to do with the American President? Or did I miss the news about a new animal species called Obama? To me this looks like a silly way to sell more safaris, but maybe I’m wrong, is this actually an interesting alternative to the regular safaris?

New Blogger: I’m Tim and I’m Traveling to East Africa!

July 7th, 2009 by Tim Steve

Hi,

Looks like I am the first one to register as a “Fellow Travel Blogger” on this sweet Africa blog. So I will just give a short introduction to who I am and where I am traveling:

My name is Tim, I am an American citizen, but feel more like a World citizen. I have traveled all my life and my next trip will be to East Africa. I have never traveled in Africa before, so if other travelers have any advice for me that would be awesome! I haven’t set up a detailed plan for my trip other than a few “must-do’s” like the safaris, etc. I imagine the end result will be something like:

Flying into Nairobi and travel from there to Tanzania. Safari either in Kenya, Tanzania or both. After this I will probably be going down to the coast, maybe even to Zanzibar. I have also been considering Uganda and Rwanda instead of Tanzania’s coast / Zanzibar, but I don’t know much about those countries yet. So basically all I need now is some suggestions from people with more travel experience in those areas than what I have!

And I will keep you all updated on how my plan develops, and hopefully I will write some thrilling blog posts from my trip when I’m over there!

Thanks,

-Tim

Leopards are hard to spot without the help from an experienced Safari Guide

Leopards are hard to spot without the help from an experienced Safari Guide

If you are thinking about going on a safari in an African game reserve or national park, you should take a quick read through this article first. Africa has too many parks for anyone to really explore them all in a life time. So that means that you have to choose the best reserve for you and your needs and interests. Each park has it’s own strength and weakness, some are great for bird watching, some for gorilla trekking, some for lions and some for rhinos. You won’t find them all in one safari. Unless you’re extremely lucky. So here is a short guide to help you find the best African Safari National Parks and Game Reserves.
