Living In South Africa

November 24th, 2011 by martindalefarm

I am an American who has been living in South Africa for the past 7 plus years. I had always heard and seen nothing but horror stories about Africa and it’s people. I never dreamed that one day I would be living in this beautiful country.

I met my now husband on the Internet, who is from the UK, but has been living in South Africa for over 30 years and has traveled the country quite a bit.

I am very impressed with the wildlife that actually roams the bush here. It is like none that you will see any place else. It is not unusual to see baboons or monkeys simply playing along the side of the roads here. We have seen elephants, that I can safely say, if I had put my hand out the window of the car, I would have been able to touch it. Zebras are the most beautiful creatures to see in their natural habitat, as is lions and warthogs. My eyes have seen more beautiful animals in the wild than I would ever want to see in the zoo.

Bird life, is abundant and it is nothing to hear or to see an owl sitting on your fence post. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity that I have had during these 7+ years. I shall truly miss it, as we are selling our small farm and moving to the US.

We have what is called a smallholding farm of 18 1/2 acres and if I could box it all up and put it onto the container cargo ship and open it up and continue my life, I would not hesitate. South Africa is truly an amazing place, especially along the coastal areas.

Game farms are abundant here. People raise all sorts of animals for various reasons, but to actually see them in the wild is an experience that one shall never forget.

The people I have met while being in South Africa are so special. I have learned that people of all walks of life really can live side by side and learn to get along with one another. There are a total of 11 official languages here in South Africa. Me, well I can only speak my English and I have learned a tiny Xoshua, very tiny. I will always remember that the time I spent here in South Africa has been rewarding and educational.

The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town

January 24th, 2010 by admin

Cape Town's Waterfront There are a few items on every tourist’s to-do list in Cape Town. Shopping / dining at the V&A Waterfront is likely to be one of them. This relatively recently developed part of Cape Town has most of what it takes to please your appetite as well as your mind (the part of your mind that loves a new piece of clothing, art, or fancy gadget). The only part of you that may suffer is your financial conscience. For most of us, it can be a tough challenge to spend a day at the Waterfront without severely breaking your planned travel budget.

The Blog Awakes, This Time in Cape Town

January 23rd, 2010 by admin

Regular readers will have noticed that the blog has been quite sleepy over the past 6-8 weeks. The reason behind this drowsiness is that the blog (or the author), has changed it’s base from California to Cape Town (with a four week de-tour in Norway). The good news, though, are that I am now settled in Cape Town, South Africa, and the blog will again be regularly updated with interesting stories, photos, destinations, tips, advice and lots of travel information; This time served to you directly from the southern tip of Africa.

The focus of the stories, will as you might expect, be centered around the city and country of their origin, Cape Town and South Africa. But I will do my best to also include at least one post a week about a destination elsewhere in Africa.

If you have any comments about the blog, now is the time to share them. And until next post is published, here are a few photos from my descent into the Mother City, with the infamous Table Mountain and Table Cloth in the lead role.

Moving To South Africa – Blog Information

December 14th, 2009 by Hakon Kavli

The Africa Travel Blog has been a little quiet lately, and there is a reason for that. Over the past couple of weeks I have been very busy preparing for a big move. A move all the way from San Diego, California, via Oslo, Norway, to Cape Town in South Africa. And the first step will be taken the day after tomorrow, when the whole transition begins with a flight to Oslo. Two weeks later I will be accompanied with my lovely fiance, Eleyce, and together we will fly to South Africa.

Now, during this transition time of about 4 weeks, the blog may be more or less slow and not very regularly updated. Though, I hope you will forgive me, because after this temporary slump, The Africa Travel Blog will revive and I will bring you first hand travel information from the amazing African continent (at least the southern tip of it!).

Follow My Africa Journal – Experiences, pictures and stories

If you’re a personal friend, family or just nosy (curious), you should follow my personal journal where I will share my experiences, pictures and stories. You will find my journal, naturally, in the JOURNALS category. And if you’re really curious about how our life will be like down there, well then I suggest that you sign up to the email alerts for the journal. That means that you will receive an email every day I have posted a little blurb about what I am doing down there! Click here to subscribe!

Follow The Africa Travel Blog – Information, tips, destinations and news

If you’re not very interested in my personal life, but rather want to follow the travel tips, news, and information that usually appear on the blog’s front page; Then you can sign up to the Admin RSS which sends you an email alert every day there is a new post (but it ignores my personal journal blurbs). Click here to subscribe to The Africa Travel Blog email alerts.

Thank you for reading, please return soon!

3 Questions about Cape Town!

December 2nd, 2009 by Perry Krafts

I will be in Cape Town over christmas, alone, and need to know what I can do to pass time.

I am staying in the downtown area, close to long street. What are good places to go eat / drink and meet other travelers?

What are the best tourist attractions? Sightseeing?

Can I hike up the Table Mountain alone?

Do I need a car to travel outside of Cape Town? Or do they have public transportation?

I guess that’s 4 questions. Thanks for helping out!

African Ocean Safaris – The Big 4 of the Seas

November 24th, 2009 by admin

Ocean Safaris AfricaI recently read a little article in Time Magazine called Think Big with an Africa Ocean Safari. And it reminded me that with a continent so full of magnificent wildlife on land, most of us don’t think of the fact that it is surrounded by an incredible under water scenery as well. So that left me with just one thing to do: I had to dive into the online ocean of information, to find out more about what sort of sea creatures we can see in Africa’s Under Water World!
