When tourists travel to South Africa, it is usually to see the Kruger Park, Cape Town, the Winelands, Robben Island and maybe the Garden Route. But there is one part of South Africa’s nature and history, that is not very well known, but just as interesting and impressive. I am talking about the huge, deep, pre-historic, marvelous (and maybe a little bit scary) caves of South Africa.

The Drakensberg Mountains might just be the top notch of South Africa’s many beautiful sceneries. The Drakensberg is South Africa’s highest mountain range and is located in the Kwazulu-Natal and Free State Province in eastern South Africa. And we are not the first people on earth to marvel at the beauty of this region. The Drakensberg Moutains are full of caves where you can find ancient rock art and paintings made by the Bushmen, thousands of years ago.

A new dinosaur species has been discovered in South Africa (well, new isn’t very accurate, it’s about 200 000 000 years old). I’m not a dinosaur person, and I won’t go in too much technical details about this discovery, but I will share my immediate thoughts.
They claim it is a missing link, though, by they I mean the media. Scientists don’t like to use that term, unless they’re looking for PR. But the scientists do say that it is an important discovery to further understand the transition from small-ish two-legged dinosaurs to massive four legged monsters like this guy:

So, it seems like South Africa is still brainstorming on how to make next summer’s World Cup a success. In some areas they come up with new and creative ides, while on other fields they have apparently been caught by a serious lack of imagination. I mean, long distance trains morfed into hooligan jails - I like it: good thinking. It sounds to me like a fair solution to a lack-of-prison-cells problem. Ideally, the train should be ready on it’s tracks to England where the hooligans are likely to come from in the first place (I apologize for my use of stereotypes).

When I am traveling, food often happens to be the main focus of my days. As soon as the breakfast is consumed I am already thinking about lunch. The dinner has been staked out days ahead. Actually food is so important to my travels that it can be the deciding factor of what my destination will be. For example, I really want to travel to India and my main motivation for that is the amazing Indian cooking! Same with Thailand. But how about South Africa? Are there any gastronomic surprises waiting for all those hungry World Cup tourists? What kind of food do they serve for tourists in South Africa?

The Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk published the winners of their Travel Awards yesterday, and Cape Town is surging upwards. Leaping 5 steps closer to the top, Cape Town was voted 2nd Favorite Overseas City for British travelers, only beat by Sydney.
Personally I am not surprised, as I have written in earlier posts, Cape Town is my favorite travel destination city in the world. But for South Africa this is great news. They need as much good publicity as possible both to keep their tourism industry growing and to warm up for the next summer’s huge event, the FIFA World Cup. But luckily there is no lack of favorable publicity; South Africa seems to have been riding a wave of popularity and awards lately, and just the fact that they were chosen as host for the 2010 World Cup is a huge statement by itself!

The Blue Train in South Africa is a gift from above for you who are fed up with the hassle of air travel and happen to also have pretty deep pockets. Wouldn’t you rather feel the nostalgia of an old fashioned, luxurious and relaxing way of travel? Today’s travelers are stressing through airports full of annoying security rules, squeezing into tiny airplane seats, and arrive at their destination with king size cankles and major jet-lags. All in the purpose of getting to their destination as fast as possible. So why don’t we just take a step back in time, and let the journey be the destination on the classic, historic and famous Blue Train of South Africa?

Cape Town is, as I have said before, one of my all time favorite cities. But as a traveler, you have to know what you’re doing and where you’re going at all times. If you don’t, there is a fair chance your capetown-vacation ends up in the “memories-to-forget-drawer”. Cape Town seems to be haunted by brutal crimes that can scare the guts out of the biggest rugby player, but it also offers beautiful beaches, amazing mountains and landscape, interesting architecture, friendly people, and lots of culture, food and nightlife. And by following my simple tips below, I think your vacation is more likely to become a huge success!
