Okavango Delta – A Crystal Clear Oasis in the Kalahari Desert

November 3rd, 2009 by admin

The Okavango Delta looks like a natural wonder as the crystal clear water comes streaming into the Kalahari Desert and creates a lively oasis of wildlife and plants once a year. After a long and dry summer in the desert, the Okavango River will be completely drained by the end of February. But come March, and the rainwater that fell in Angola a month earlier will have made it’s way down to Botswana and the Okavango Delta. From March till June the Okavango River will increase in size and eventually it forms the largest inland delta in the world!

Mount Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s highest peak, it is also one of Africa’s most popular physical challenges! At 5892 meters above sea level, and 4600 meters above it’s base, the mountain provides a serious and demanding trek that takes between 6 and 10 days, depending on which of the six routes your climbing.

Food in South Africa: What is cooking for us hungry World Cup tourists?

October 29th, 2009 by Hakon Kavli

South African Cuisine When I am traveling, food often happens to be the main focus of my days. As soon as the breakfast is consumed I am already thinking about lunch. The dinner has been staked out days ahead. Actually food is so important to my travels that it can be the deciding factor of what my destination will be. For example, I really want to travel to India and my main motivation for that is the amazing Indian cooking! Same with Thailand. But how about South Africa? Are there any gastronomic surprises waiting for all those hungry World Cup tourists? What kind of food do they serve for tourists in South Africa?

Photos From Africa – The Best of the Web

October 26th, 2009 by admin

Wildlife in Africa Everyone with a passion for Africa and Travel will always appreciate good photos of the African landscape, cultures, people and wildlife. With a continent so full of amazing beauty, you don’t need to be a professional photographer to take stunning pictures. But of course it helps to have some skills, so instead of making an album out of my own amateur-ish photos, I will rather direct you to my favorite websites for pictures from Africa.

Trek Earth’s Africa Gallery is the first one to have my recommendations! They have great photos from all over Africa, and they have tons of them!

Travellerspoint has a good collection of African travel photos taken by travelers like you and me. But as I said earlier, you don’t need to be a professional to take beautiful pictures in Africa. Here is one of their albums, this one with Travel Pictures from South Africa.

Healthy Travel in Africa

October 22nd, 2009 by admin

Healthy Travel AfricaOne important topic, Healthy Travel in Africa, is something that all travelers should read at least the bare minimums about before taking off. And two important sub-categories are Travel Immunizations for Africa and How to Travel Healthy. I remember that I had a whole variety of shots and drinks (sounds like a party, but I am talking about immunizations) before going to Africa, and you should probably consider to do the same thing. So here I’ll try to list the essentials and then direct you to the more thorough sites if you feel like being even more prepared!

Photo Diary: Seeing Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe

October 16th, 2009 by Hakon Kavli

Victoria Falls Here comes the Photo Diary from Victoria Falls, a follow up the more informative post Travel to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia. All these photos are from the trip I had with my fiance, Eleyce, through Southern Africa where we spent approximately a week around the Victoria Falls in both Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Since the photos are more interesting than the actual story, I chose not to write more here but rather write a little description with some of the pictures.

Travel to the Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia

October 15th, 2009 by Hakon Kavli

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia is one of Africa’s top destinations for natural scenery. These dramatic water falls which are part of the mighty Zambezi river is definitely worth the trip if you find yourself in Southern Africa. The area is super green and trails are set up for you to walk around and take in the whole view. From Zimbabwe you can see the falls as they “pour out” of Zambia, and in Zambia you can literally stand on top of the falls and see the water flow all around you.

Where the Hell is Matt? -An Epic 5 Minute Travel Video!

October 15th, 2009 by Hakon Kavli

This is the story about Matt Harding, who’s 5 minute travel video has been viewed by twenty five million people on YouTube, and is impossible not to love. As an Africa Travel Blog I should also mention that during these 5 rich minutes he manage to feature eight African travel destinations which include Zanzibar, Mali, Madagascar (x2), Zambia, Morocco and South Africa (x2). It took him 14 months to create the video, and he visited 42 countries all over the world in it’s making.

It’s not much more to say other than: “Please watch this video”. It gave me the goosebumps and made my fiance cry (!). And I wish to say “thank you” to the two South African guys who walked into the store where I work yesterday and showed this video to me. I have watched it countless times since then.

Itinerary Planning: The Cape Peninsula vs The Garden Route?

October 8th, 2009 by admin

The Cape Peninsula or The Garden Route? The other day I was planning a two weeks travel itinerary for South Africa, of which one week will be a safari and the remaining week will be around Cape Town and possibly also the Garden Route. During this planning I realized that even though the Garden Route seems to be included in every South African travel itinerary, it is not necessarily that obvious to me that it belongs there. The more I thought about this, the more I was convinced that the remaining week should be spent around the Cape Peninsula rather than the Garden Route.
