This place is quite undiscovered and is still quite unspoiled. The tiny island of lamu is Kenya’s oldest city; this amazing place is where you can explore all of Africa’s Swahili and Islamic cultures. There is just one car on the entire island.  The streets here are too tiny to accommodate any kind of vehicles except donkeys. Although this place lies in the Indian Ocean, it has deep links with the Middle East; this is because this place used to be a major link that connected Africa to Arabia.

This is one of the many towns that have been founded by Arab traders who dealt in ivory, slave and various spices as well. . The men here wear long white robes and caps to cover their head. . The women here dress up in the black curtain on their face or the Purdhah.  The best way to travel in this area is by boat.  The boats here are the dhow, which are large wooden boats that have been used traditionally by these people.  These big wooden boats can be rented and you can have a very romantic day trip that takes you all around the Lamu archipelago.  You should definability try the grilled fish lunch.  The grilled fish in this region is very famous and most delight able.

Most of the people who used to live here, including the hippies have left now; these are replaced with a group of European backpackers and people from many different places on the planet. . Once you are done with all this check into the beautiful peponi hotel which is located on a twelve mile strip of beautiful virgin beaches.

This place is filled with diverse people. These included international eccentrics, villagers, and expats from Nairobi.  The public bar in this place hums with life and color.  If you’re like windsurfing and deep sea diving then this is an awesome place for you.  Or if you don’t then you can just lie back and relax in the beautiful white sand in the region.  This place also has magnificent open traced beach bungalows.

These are separated from each other by bougainvilleas and flame trees.  There are nice big and breezy rooms here that have ceiling fans that revolve and mosquito prevention nets and locally embroidered cloth decorating the room. Peponi hotel was earlier owned by a Danish family and created in a special and intimate manner.  The hotel apart from all this is also known for its friendly staff, its good service and the soft hospitality that is given to its guests. The menu here is also fresh from the market with scrumptious food made in authentic Swahili style, although they would modify it to suit your taste buds.
